MONDAY, JULY 22, 2024. The University of Ibadan College of Medicine (CoMUI) recently celebrated a significant milestone as 147 graduates from the class of 2024 were inducted into the medical profession. The ceremony was held in July 16, at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre within the University College Hospital (UCH) premises, and marked the beginning of promising careers for 122 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduates and 25 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) graduates.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji and his wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, who attended to witness their daughter Toluwanimi's induction. Other notable attendees included Professor Kayode Adebowale, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, and Dr. Fatima Kyari, Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), represented by Dr. Okwuokenye Henry.

During the induction ceremony, the MDCN representative charged the new doctors to uphold the tenets of their profession, warning of severe consequences for those who violate ethical standards. This sentiment was echoed by Professor Adebowale who reminded the inductees of the divine nature of their calling, saying; "The medical profession is a divine call with the Almighty God who heals. CoMUI parades as her products some of the best medical doctors all over the world."

The Vice Chancellor also addressed the global healthcare challenges, urging the new doctors to contribute to Nigeria's health sector rather than being swayed by opportunities abroad. "Healthcare systems are under pressure globally. Don't be deceived by greener pastures elsewhere but help the health sector in our country," he said.

Professor Olayinka Omigbodun, Provost of the College of Medicine, commended the parents and guardians for their sacrifices and encouraged the new doctors to remain focused and be good ambassadors of the college. She emphasized the importance of giving back to the system that had provided their education in these words; "The government has trained you almost for free, and as such, you must seek means of giving back to the system by supporting the health sector in the country."

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of awards and prizes to deserving inductees, celebrating their academic achievements and setting the stage for their future contributions to healthcare in Nigeria and beyond.

As these 147 new doctors embark on their professional journeys, they carry with them the responsibility of upholding the high standards set by their alma mater and the expectation to make meaningful impacts in the lives of their patients and communities.
