FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2024. Africa is currently grappling with an unprecedented surge in dengue cases, raising significant concerns about the continent's preparedness to handle this emerging health crisis. As global dengue infections reach record highs, Africa faces unique challenges in combating this mosquito-borne disease.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the first eight months of this year have seen over 12 million dengue cases worldwide, resulting in more than 8,000 deaths across 86 countries and territories. While South America bears the brunt of this global outbreak with 11 million cases, Africa is experiencing a worrying upward trend.
The Africa CDC reports a staggering 369% increase in total dengue cases compared to the same period last year. As of September 16, 2023, there were 68,814, of which 11,523 were confirmed and there have been 81 deaths so far. This dramatic rise is particularly alarming given that only 14,674 cases and 23 deaths were reported during the same period in 2022.
Currently, 15 African countries have reported dengue cases this year (up from 10 in 2022) and Burkina Faso has been badly hit by this disease outbreak with 67% of all reported cases. However, there have been several challenges which have made it difficult for Africa to tackle the dengue outbreak and they include rapid urbanization, limited clinical experience, underdetection of primary infection and funding constraints thereby hindering preparedness and response
Dengue, caused by four serologically related viruses, has seen a tenfold increase in reported cases over the past two decades. However, experts believe even this figure is likely an underestimate, highlighting the urgent need for improved surveillance and reporting systems.
As Africa confronts this growing health threat, it is crucial for international health organizations, governments and local communities to collaborate in implementing effective prevention and control measures. Addressing the unique challenges faced by the continent will be key to mitigating the impact of this alarming dengue outbreak.
