NDLEA Arrests Man With 50,000 Pills of Tramadol Inside Gas Cylinder

March 23, 2025. In an intelligence-based operation in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recovered 50,000 pills of tramadol hidden inside a 50 litres gas cylinder.

This arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by Femi Babafemi, The Director of Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, to newsmen today.

Babafemi said that during the operation that led to the recovery, a 45-year-old suspect, Michael Ogundele, was arrested with the gas cylinder at Gadar Tamburawa, along Zaria-Kano Road. 

Welding tools were later used to cut the large cylinder after which 50,000 pills of tramadol 225mg concealed in it were extracted.

About Tramadol

Tramadol is an opioid drug whose manufacture, distribution and use is highly controlled by drug regulatory authorities worldwide.

It that may be used to treat moderate to moderately severe chronic pain in adults. It is available in the following dosage forms: oral tablets, oral capsules, extended-release tablets, extended-release capsules and intravenous injection.

The extended-release forms of tramadol may be used in adults who require around-the-clock treatment of their pain for an extended period.

Tramadol should not be used in children younger than 12 years old, or anyone younger than 18 years old with other risk factors (such as breathing problems).

  • Slowing or stoppage of breathing

  • Death

Tramadol should not be taken if you have severe breathing problems, a head injury or raised pressure inside your skull, a blockage in your stomach or intestines. It also should not be taken if you have recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, other narcotic medications, or an antidepressants (MAO inhibitor like, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and others). Tramadol should not be used if you are suicidal or prone to addiction. It should also not be used if you have liver or kidney disease

Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with tramadol, some of which have caused death. Other hypersensitivity reactions include itching, hives, narrowing of the airways, swelling of the face and airways (angioedema), and serious skin

Get emergency medical help if you or someone you know, overdoses on tramadol or have signs of an allergic reaction to tramadol or a severe skin reaction (e.g., fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, a red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.
