Vaping is the action or practice of inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device. An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a handheld battery-powered vaporizer that affords some of the behavioral aspects of smoking, including the hand-to-mouth action of smoking, inhaling and exhaling vaporized chemicals and flavors but without burning tobacco. Vaping is the tobacco industry’s carefully crafted strategy to combat the commercial impact of anti-tobacco legislations and sentiments on their profits.
Vaping has been in the news recently, most especially in the United States with reports of adolescents and young adults presenting in emergency rooms across the country with various cardiac, respiratory, neurological complications and physical injuries.
Vaping occurs in most African countries. But unlike in northern countries, the legislative and regulatory framework for its control and marketing is weak or in fact non-existent in many countries of Africa.
The resource presented here provides a detailed overview of the status of vaping in Afrca.
